Theatre On Ice (TOI) uses all aspects of figure skating to incorporate a theme, an emotion or story enhanced by music. Teams consisting of 8 to 24 skaters utilize “Choreographic Processes” and “Gestures” as described in their Choreographic Dictionary as the foundations of their program skills. Collectively, the programs are intended to produce a feeling of harmony and balance throughout. While solo skating and execution of jumps, spins, lifts and other technical elements associated with the other disciplines of figure skating are allowed, it must be done in a way that maintains the relationship to music, theme/story as well as the other skaters of the group. The ideal is to maintain the continuity and harmony of the group throughout the program. U.S. Figure Skating judges evaluate the programs using a Component Judging System (CJS) that rewards Skating Skills, Choreographic Composition, Quality of Groups, Theatricality and the Creation of a Universe. There are no GOEs rewarded for any technical elements. Component marks alone provide the analysis of each program.
There are several TOI teams and TOI competitions around the country, and U.S. Figure Skating is making an effort to standardize and promote this competitive opportunity. Skaters, both competitive and noncompetitive, can learn and grow on a theatre team. Best of all, a team can draw skaters together and increase rink and club spirit!
Skaters experience great rewards from joining a Theatre On Ice team and enjoy the chance to receive the following benefits:
- Opportunity to develop the dramatic side of skating
- Opportunity to be part of a team while using technical skills
- Opportunity for travel both locally and internationally
- Opportunity to make new friends
