Summer Hockey Academy
Summer Hockey Academy, lead by Triad Hockey Association Player Development Director Jeff Markham, is open to skaters ages 7-16 . This includes current and prior Learn to Skate Hockey 3-4 students, LTP participants ages 7 and up, and Mites & 8U THA skaters. Summer Hockey Academy offers an excellent, age-appropriate program which aims to provide a framework for developing skills throughout a youth hockey career.
The full week SHA session features 8 hours of on-ice instruction, 3 hours of off-ice training, 2 hours of class room and video instruction and a week’s end scrimmage game to show off skills learned! Plus, special appearances by Carolina Thunderbirds players!

Training Fundamentals
The Summer Hockey Academy program features fundamentals such as forward strides, forward and backward C-cuts, edges, crossovers, stopping and more, to improve balance and agility! Participants will be guided through power skating, shooting, creative stick handling and innovative passing drills.
Our daily off-ice training program consists of a workout designed to improve strength, power, agility, quickness and endurance. Daily dry land training sessions will include sprint intervals, quick foot movement exercises, agility courses and drills designed to improve explosiveness.
Off-Ice Hockey Talk will offer classroom instruction on hockey terminology, hockey positions, field dimensions and safety. SHA participants will learn hockey game understanding and rules.
Personal Growth
Summer Hockey Academy provides a safe and structured environment focusing on skill development through fun and challenging training sessions to help participants gain confidence. Students will learn the importance of positive team skills such as working together towards the same goal, trust, motivation and working hard at every practice, training session and game – skills that will benefit players throughout their hockey career.
SHA will strive to inspire enthusiasm, along with focusing on building positive self-esteem by teaching participants the importance of personal fitness coupled with on and off-ice training.

Required Equipment
Yes, participants will need their own equipment. In addition to hockey skates (owned or borrowed from the rink’s skate rental inventory), the following equipment is required:

Should my child know how to skate in order to attend Summer Hockey Academy?
Yes, participants must have completed a minimum of Learn to Skate Hockey level 3. Summer Hockey Academy is open to Learn to Skate Hockey 3-4 students, Learn to Play participants, Mites/8U & THA skaters. Skaters will be grouped by skill level and our coaches will deliver targeted instruction to the range of participants.
My child doesn’t have their own skates – do I need to purchase skates?
No, participants do not need to purchase skates. If needed, rental hockey skates are included with tuition.
My child doesn’t have their own equipment – do I need to have or purchase equipment?
Yes, participants will need their own equipment. In addition to hockey skates (owned or borrowed from the rink’s skate rental inventory), the following equipment is required:

Will someone be available to help my child tie their skates?
Yes! Our coaches and staff will assist with skate tying! And, it will be a goal for skaters to learn the basics of skate tying while enrolled!
Will someone be available to help my child dress for afternoon on-ice sessions?
Our coaches and staff will strive to help all skaters needing assistance.
What should my skater bring to Summer Hockey Academy?
Skaters are asked to bring a packed lunch, water bottle, and a beach towel for off-ice classes. Participants must label all belongings with their name! Participants should also bring their energy! Summer Hockey Academy is an activity based camp – there is not a lot of down time! Electronics will not be permitted during on or off-ice activities.
What should my skater wear to Summer Hockey Academy?
Skaters are encouraged to dress in athletic attire: shorts or lightweight sweatpants, a t’shirt, and socks, along with a lightweight, zip-up jacket or sweatshirt. Tennis shoes are a must! Participants are asked to avoid wearing jeans.
Does the Ice House have a snack bar?
The rink does not have a snack bar so be sure to pack enough food for your skater! Summer Hockey Academy participants will bring a packed lunch and a water bottle. A daily afternoon snack item will be provided.
What are the drop-off and pick-up times?
Daily drop-off is 9:45am.
Pick-up is 3:15pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Pick up is between 2-4pm on Tuesday and Thursday
Drop off and pick up times are fixed-firm; supervision is not available prior to 945 or after 4pm. Children may not be left unattended prior to scheduled drop-off and/or after pick-up times.
