Greensboro Ice House Adult Hockey
League
Between the current winter session and the summer session that begins in May, the GAHL will be going through a substantial reorganization. The purpose of this project is to better match each division with its description by creating an additional division. This will also allow us to offer an even greater diversity of playing levels. We will make every effort to keep current teams together. Below, you will see how each division will be structured.
Beginning in the Summer of 2013, the Greensboro Adult Hockey League (GAHL) will have over 30 recreational teams in 7 divisions based on player skill. The league is USA Hockey sanctioned. We are proud to have teams compete each season for the ultimate prize, the Manley Cup. Teams in the GAHL
are divided among the following divisions:

A League: Recreational hockey at the highest level. You may see former professional or collegiate players, players with high level junior experience, or players who competed at a high level in youth hockey.
B1 League: Competitive hockey league. You may see players who competed at the youth level for many years but did not play competitively beyond that. You may also see college club players or players who started playing late but picked up the game quickly.
B2 League: Older players who competed as youth or as an adult and still like competitive hockey at a faster pace. You may also see younger players who have some speed/skill but are still learning the game. The skilled players have aged and slowed. Faster players are not as skilled.
C1 League: Moderately skilled players looking to play hockey at a moderate yet competitive pace. May contain older players that posess some skill but have slowed down or newer players that cannot be considered beginners due to moderate speed and/or skill.
C2 League: Slower hockey. May contain older players that still remain at a novice skill and speed level or players that are looking for a level of hockey just beyond the beginner level.
C3 League: Slow hockey. You may see beginning players looking for a league environment made up of players who have progressed beyond learn to play or D level. This league is made up of predominately new players still learning to skate well and play the game or older players who may not progress as quickly as younger players.
D League: A weekly learn to play scrimmage game designed for the beginning hockey player. This league is for anyone that is just picking up the sport and takes on a learn as you go format. Players will be moved up and out of this level as they progress(moreso than in other leagues). Players that remain at this level have either not progressed as quickly as others or still have low skating speed.

The "Manley Cup"
|
History of the Manley Cup
"I was thinking it would be a great idea to have a trophy to present to the division champions of the Greensboro Adult Hockey League at the conclusion of each season."
These words jokingly uttered at the Spring captains' meetings in 2006 by Lord Bob Riedlinger of Greensboro. When the league administrators and captains agreed, Lord Bob Riedlinger set the wheels in motion. He contacted his father, Gordon Riedlinger, known throughout his hometown of Kitchener and province of Ontario as a master wood-worker to discuss taking on the honor of producing such a trophy.
As the hockey gods would have it, a mighty storm soon whipped through the town of Kitchener, Ontario claiming many of the local hardwoods. When "Gord" walked onto the back porch of his home, he had a vision. To many, it would look simply as a downed Sugar Maple. To "Gord," it was his favorite Sugar Maple. A Sugar Maple that had stood for some 130 years. He envisoned a way to keep this inspiring timber alive and enjoyed by many for years to come.

Gordon Riedlinger began to cut and carve from this historic tree. Sure he had created many beautiful pieces of furniture from tables, chairs, and armoirs, to entertainment centers, bookshelves, and yard pieces. But he had never been appointed such an honor. Legend has it that "Gord" nearly severed a finger during its creation. "All part of the game" he chuckled later. In the Fall of 2006, his masterpiece was complete. In the Winter of 2007, Arnie's Beer Drinkers, the UNCG Hockey Spartans, and the Chiefs all hoisted what Lord Bob Riedlinger called the Manley Cup as reward for their greuling playoff runs. To this day, it is still known by this name.
Each season, some 300 adult leaguers covet the honor and thrill of hoisting the Manley Cup. Ask anyone who has won this cup and they probably have a great story they will share about their time spent with the cup. Join us today and join the quest for the cup!
Since its inception, Lord Bob Riedlinger has yet to hoist the Manley Cup in victory. For you superstitious souls, you may want to respectfully decline an invititation to join his team until he is able to break this curse. Is this finally the season in which he will do just that? UPDATE: Sadly, the curse continues after a loss in the championship game to the mighty Penguins.
